Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does bass travel through walls when high sounds don't?
The Big Idea
Bass travels through walls because low sounds have long, slow waves that shake a whole wall at once! High sounds have short waves that bounce off or get soaked up. So bass slips through and high notes mostly stay out.
Long Slow Waves
Step one: long slow waves. Low sounds, like bass, have long waves that push and pull slowly. These big waves can shake a whole wall at once.
The Wall Wiggles
Step two: the wall wiggles. A heavy wall can stop small, quick sound waves, yet the big, slow ones still push and pull on it. So the wall wiggles with the bass and passes it to the other side.
High Sounds Stay Out
Step three: high sounds are blocked. High sounds have short waves that bounce off the wall or get soaked up. That is why thumping bass from the next apartment is so annoying.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Bass has long, slow waves. High notes have short, quick waves. The wall wiggles for the bass but blocks the high notes. So the next room hears mostly the thump.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Thick, heavy walls and soft materials block more sound. Gaps around doors let high sounds sneak through. Rugs and bookshelves can help quiet a room. Keep music low to be kind to your ears and neighbors.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, try this! Play quiet music in one room with the door closed. Listen from the next room. Which parts of the music can you hear? Which parts disappear? Write down what you notice.
