Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do voices sound so strange underwater?

The Big Idea

Voices sound strange underwater because our ears are built for sound that arrives through air! Underwater, sound comes through the water and the bones of your head. Water and air are very different for sound.

Ears Like Air

Step one: ears are made for air. Your ear is shaped to catch sound waves that travel through air. The eardrum picks up those waves and passes them inward.

Water Changes It

Step two: a wall at the surface. Little of the sound from the air above makes it into the water. So a voice from above sounds muffled when your ears are under water.

Through the Head

Step three: sound through bone. Underwater, sound comes through the water and the bones of your head, from all directions at once. Your own voice sounds odd too, because there is very little air to carry it.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A voice speaks in the air above. Most of that sound bounces off the water. What gets in travels through your head bones. So the voice sounds strange and muffled.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Water and air are very different for sound. Sound moves faster in water, so it behaves differently. Divers learn special ways to communicate underwater. Never put your head underwater without a grown-up watching.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like an explorer! In a bath with a grown-up nearby, put your ears under the water while a friend talks above. Keep your nose and mouth above the water. How does their voice sound? Then hum and compare how it sounds.

Outro

Ears are made for air, so underwater voices sound strange. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
