Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a balloon squeal when you let the air out?

The Big Idea

A balloon squeals because the stretched rubber flutters as air rushes by! It works a bit like your lips when you blow a raspberry. Air rushing past it makes it vibrate, and the flutter makes the squeal.

Air Rushes Out

Step one: air rushes out. A blown-up balloon has air squeezed inside. When you let go, the air rushes out through the narrow neck. The tighter it was squeezed, the faster it escapes.

Rubber Flutters

Step two: the rubber flutters. The stretched edges of the neck flutter in the stream of air, like lips. Each flutter chops the air into puffs, and the puffs make a squeal.

Pitch Changes

Step three: the pitch changes. Stretching the neck tighter makes the squeal higher and thinner. As the balloon empties, the pressure drops and the pitch changes too.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The balloon holds squeezed air. The air rushes out of the neck. The rubber edges flutter. And the flutter makes a squeal that rises and falls.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A tighter neck makes a higher squeal, like a tight guitar string. A looser neck makes a lower, floppier sound. Wind instruments like the oboe use fluttering reeds in a similar way. Balloons can pop, so keep them away from your eyes and ears.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, try this with a grown-up! Blow up a balloon only a little. Pinch the neck and let the air out slowly. Stretch the neck wider and narrower to change the pitch. Keep the balloon away from your eyes and ears.

Outro

A balloon squeals because the rubber flutters in rushing air, just like lips. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
