Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a spoon hung on a string sound like a big bell?

The Big Idea

A spoon on a string sounds like a big bell because the string carries the sound straight to your head! Solid things pass vibrations along better than air does. So you hear deeper, richer, bell-like tones.

Spoon Shakes

Step one: the spoon shakes. When the spoon bumps something, it starts to vibrate. The shaking travels up the string to your fingers.

Solids Carry It

Step two: solids carry the shaking. Solid things pass vibrations along very well, much better than air does. The shaking goes through the string, your fingers, and the bones near your ears.

Deep Bell Sound

Step three: you hear a bell. Your skull carries sound to your inner ear, too. This way of hearing lets the deep parts of the spoon's sound come through strongly, so it sounds like a big bell.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The spoon vibrates when it bumps. The string carries the vibration. Your fingertips pass it to your head. And your ears hear a deep, bell-like tone.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sound reaches your inner ear through air, and also through bone. This is why your own voice sounds different on a recording. Some hearing devices use bone to carry sound. Keep the bumps gentle to protect your ears.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like an explorer! Tie a metal spoon to the middle of a long string. Wrap the string ends around your index fingers, and gently touch your fingertips to the outside of your ears. Lean forward and let the spoon bump the table softly. What do you hear?

Outro

A string carries the spoon's shaking right to your ears. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
