Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do footsteps sound different on different floors?

The Big Idea

Footsteps sound different because floors bounce, shake, or soak up sound in different ways! Hard floors sound sharp, wood floors boom, and carpet is hushed. Your shoes matter too.

Hard Floors

Step one: hard floors. Tile and stone do not give, so they bounce your step's sound right back. That makes footsteps sound sharp and clicky. Your shoes slap down and the sound bounces off the walls.

Wood Floors

Step two: wood floors. Wooden boards can shake like a drum when you step. The shaking floor adds a low boom to the sound. Hollow spaces under the boards can make it boom even more.

Soft Carpet

Step three: carpet. Carpet is soft and fluffy, so it soaks up the sound. The soft fibers trap sound waves, so fewer reach your ears. Soft soles also thud, while hard soles click.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Tile bounces sound, so it is sharp. Wood shakes, so it can boom. Carpet soaks up sound, so it is quiet. Room size and furniture change the sound too.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Hard soles click, and soft soles thud. Big empty rooms add echoes to footsteps, and can make them sound bigger. Rugs and curtains help rooms sound quieter. Walk gently, because stomping is not kind to ears or neighbors.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, take the mission! Walk across tile, wood, and carpet in socks, then in hard shoes. Close your eyes and listen. Can you tell which floor you are on? Put the floors in order from loudest to quietest.

Outro

Floors bounce, shake, or soak up your steps, so each one has its own sound. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
