Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a fast-shaking object look blurry?

The Big Idea

A fast-shaking object looks blurry because your eyes cannot follow motion that quick! Each wiggle takes only a fraction of a second. Your eyes mix all the positions together into a fuzzy shape.

A Fast Wiggle

Step one: a fast wiggle. A plucked string or ruler can wiggle back and forth dozens or hundreds of times each second. Each trip takes only a tiny fraction of a second.

Eyes Blend It

Step two: your eyes blend it. Your eyes cannot make a separate picture for every position. So they mix them together, and you see a fuzzy ghost of the string.

Slow It Down

Step three: slow it down. A phone camera in slow motion takes many pictures each second. Played back slowly, you can see each wiggle on its own.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The string wiggles faster than we can follow. Our eyes mix the positions together. That is why the string looks blurry. Slow-motion video can reveal the wiggle.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Fast vibrations look like a fuzzy ghost of the thing. Fan blades and helicopter blades blur for the same reason. A hummingbird's wings blur when it hovers. Be gentle when you pluck, and keep the band away from your face.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, your mission! Pluck a rubber band stretched over a container and watch the blur. Then ask a grown-up to film it in slow motion on a phone and watch it again. What can you see in the slow-motion video? Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Blur is just motion too fast for our eyes. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
