Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are big things usually lower in sound than small things?

The Big Idea

Big things are usually lower in sound because they swing back and forth more slowly! Slow vibrations make low sounds. Small, light things vibrate quickly, so they make high sounds.

Big Is Slow

Step one: big things are slow. Big objects are heavier and longer, so they swing back and forth more slowly, and each trip takes more time. A long swing is slower than a short one, just the same way.

Small Is Quick

Step two: small things are quick. Small objects are light, so they vibrate fast, like a tiny whistle or a little bell. Fast vibrations make high sounds.

Exceptions Exist

Step three: there are exceptions. Stiffness and tightness matter too, and a tight small string can sound high. A loose heavy string sounds low, even if it is short. So think of size as a helpful clue, not a rule.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A tuba is long and big, so it sounds low. A whistle is small, so it sounds high. Big things shake slowly. Small things shake quickly.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A tuba sounds lower than a whistle. A big drum sounds lower than a small drum. Long, thick piano strings play the low notes, and short thin ones play the high notes. Tap gently and keep sounds at a comfortable volume.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, detective task! Tap a large pot, a small pot, and a tiny cup with a wooden spoon. Put them in order from the lowest sound to the highest. Is it the same order as biggest to smallest? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
