Why Can't We See Sound Waves?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can't we see sound waves?

The Big Idea

We cannot see sound waves because they are tiny changes in air pressure, and our eyes cannot see air! But we can see what sound does. Special tools can even draw sound waves for us.

Air Is Clear

Step one: air is clear. A sound wave is a very small change in air pressure. Our eyes cannot see air, so we cannot see the wave.

See the Effects

Step two: see what sound does. We can watch a shaking rubber band, dancing rice, or a rippling puddle. Those show us that sound is moving something, even when we see nothing in the air.

Special Tools

Step three: special tools. A tool called an oscilloscope, which is oss-ILL-uh-scope, draws sound waves as wiggly lines. A microphone turns the sound into a signal, and a screen draws it.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Air is clear, so the wave is hidden. Rice and water show the shaking. A microphone catches the sound, like an electric ear. A screen draws it as a wiggly line.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A loud sound makes a tall wiggle on the screen. A high sound makes the wiggles bunch closer together. A sound-wave app on a phone does the same thing. Keep the sounds soft, and ask a grown-up to help.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, explorer task! With a grown-up and a free sound-wave app on a phone, whistle softly, then hum a low note. Watch how the wiggly line changes. Which sound makes the lines closer together? Share what you discover with a grown-up.

We cannot see sound, but we can see what it does. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
