Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do travertine terraces form?

The Big Idea

Travertine terraces look like white stone staircases made by hot springs! They form where hot water with dissolved limestone flows out. The Banff hot springs make travertine, and so do hot springs around the world.

Dissolved Limestone

Step one: dissolved limestone. Hot water underground dissolves limestone, which is called calcium carbonate. The minerals travel up with the water, like invisible passengers.

Cooling and Bubbling

Step two: cooling and bubbling. As the water cools and loses gas, it cannot hold on to the minerals anymore. The minerals are left behind as white stone, like the crust inside a kettle.

Steps Grow

Step three: steps grow. The deposits build up into steps, like stairs or little pools, one thin layer at a time. Travertine grows only a few centimeters a year, so the terraces slowly change shape.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Hot water dissolves limestone. The water flows out and cools. It loses gas and drops its minerals. White stone builds into steps, layer upon layer, year after year.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The terraces slowly change shape as the water finds new paths. Terraces can be white, cream, or even orange. Travertine is a kind of limestone, the same family of rock as chalk. Visitors must stay on trails so they do not damage the steps.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, dissolve lots of salt in warm tap water. Pour a little onto a dark plate, and let it dry for a day. Look at the white crust left behind. How is this like a travertine terrace? Water leaves, minerals stay!
