Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are some springs blue like paint?
The Big Idea
Some springs look as blue as paint! Clear, deep water takes away red light and sends blue light back to your eyes. That is why deep pools often look blue, like a piece of the sky.
Light Has Colors
Step one: light has colors. Sunlight looks white, but it is really a mix of all the colors of the rainbow. When sunlight enters water, each color is treated differently.
Water Takes Red
Step two: water takes red. Clear, deep water absorbs red light, which means it soaks it up. Blue light is scattered and bounces back out to your eyes, so the pool looks blue.
Extra Tints
Step three: extra tints. Hot water can also hold dissolved minerals that tint the color. Yellow and orange rings around the edges come from microbes.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Sunlight pours into the clear pool. The water soaks up the red light. Blue light bounces back to your eyes. And colorful microbes make rings around the edge.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Blue is the color left over when the water takes the red away. The deeper and clearer the water, the bluer it looks. Some pools are so clear that you can see far down, which makes them look bright blue. Never swim or touch water in wild hot springs.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Fill a tall clear glass with water and set it on white paper. Look down through the glass. Does the water have a hint of blue? How would this change in a pool that is very deep? It would look bluer!
