Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is Yellowstone called a supervolcano system?

The Big Idea

Yellowstone is called a supervolcano system because it sits on a giant bowl-shaped caldera! A caldera is a huge hole made when the ground collapses after a giant eruption. Yellowstone's last giant eruption was about 640,000 years ago.

A Giant Caldera

Step one: a giant caldera. Long ago, huge eruptions emptied a magma chamber, and the ground collapsed into a giant bowl called a caldera. The caldera is tens of kilometers wide.

Heat Below

Step two: heat below. Today, hot magma deep below heats the water that feeds geysers and hot springs. That is why Yellowstone has so many of them, over 10,000 hot features.

Watched Daily

Step three: watched every day. Scientists watch Yellowstone using seismometers, GPS, and gas sensors. They see no sign of a giant eruption, and if one were coming, there would be many warnings.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The caldera is a giant bowl in the ground. Hot magma sits far below. Sensors watch the ground every day. So far, there are no signs of a giant eruption.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Yellowstone has small quakes every day, which is normal. Park scientists check the data all the time, day and night. Most of Yellowstone's activity is hot springs and geysers. Supervolcano eruptions are very rare, and none is expected soon.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Find Yellowstone on a map and measure how far it is from your home. Then imagine a scientist's control room. Which instruments would you place around the caldera? And why? Explain your choices to a grown-up.

Outro

Yellowstone is carefully watched every day. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
