Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What was the biggest eruption people have ever recorded?

The Big Idea

In 1815, Mount Tambora in Indonesia had the biggest eruption in recorded history. It blasted so much ash and gas into the sky that it cooled the weather around the world. Scientists have learned a lot from it.

Giant Blast

Step one: a giant blast. In April 1815, Tambora erupted with enough force to blast the top off the mountain. Its boom was heard more than 2,000 kilometers away.

Sky Veil

Step two: a veil in the sky. The eruption sent gas high into the sky, where it formed a thin haze all around the world. The haze reflected some sunlight back into space.

Cold Summer

Step three: a cold summer. With less sunlight, 1816 became known as the year without a summer. There were frosts and cold rain, even in Canada and Europe.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Tambora in 1815 was the biggest on record. Krakatoa in 1883 made one of the loudest sounds ever recorded. Mount St. Helens in 1980 was much smaller, but well studied. Scientists learn from old diaries, newspapers, and ship logs.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Tambora is in Indonesia. Krakatoa was heard thousands of kilometers away. Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980 in Washington State. Today, instruments help warn people before eruptions.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a timeline strip from a long piece of paper. Mark 1815 for Tambora, 1883 for Krakatoa, and 1980 for Mount St. Helens. Add the year you were born. Which eruption is closest to today?

Outro

Tambora was the biggest eruption ever recorded, and its ash cooled the whole planet. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
