Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What makes a volcano go dormant or extinct?
The Big Idea
Scientists sort volcanoes into three groups: active, dormant, and extinct. Each group tells us how likely a volcano is to erupt, and scientists decide using many clues. Even a sleeping volcano needs watching, just in case.
Active
Step one: active. An active volcano is erupting now, or is likely to erupt again soon. It often has small quakes, gas, and heat that scientists can measure.
Dormant
Step two: dormant. Dormant means asleep. It is quiet now, but it still could wake up. Some dormant volcanoes have slept for tens of thousands of years.
Extinct
Step three: extinct. Extinct means the magma supply is gone, so it will not erupt again. It is hard to be sure, so scientists are very careful about using this word.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! First, scientists study past eruptions. Next, they measure the gas coming out. They also listen for little earthquakes. And they check for heat in the ground.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Dormant is the hardest group to decide. Volcanoes can sleep for a very long time and then wake up. Many active volcanoes are watched by scientists all day and all night. Instruments, not guesses, keep people informed, and that helps communities plan.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make three cards with the words active, dormant, and extinct. Write a kid-friendly meaning on each card. Sort pictures of volcanoes onto the cards. Why is dormant the hardest to decide?
Outro
Active, dormant, and extinct tell us how awake a volcano is. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
