Why Is Magma Full of Bubbles?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is magma full of bubbles?

The Big Idea

Magma has gases dissolved in it, like the fizz in soda. Deep underground, huge pressure keeps the gas squeezed inside, just like in a sealed soda bottle. As magma rises, the pressure drops, and the gas forms bubbles!

Gas Dissolved

Step one: hidden gas. Magma holds gases such as water vapor and carbon dioxide. Deep down, the pressure squeezes them in so they cannot form bubbles, so the magma looks smooth.

Pressure Drops

Step two: pressure drops. As magma rises, there is less rock pressing down on it. The gas can no longer stay dissolved, so it forms bubbles, just like fizz in a soda.

Bubbles Grow

Step three: bubbles grow. The bubbles grow and expand, and they make the magma lighter and push it upward. More gas can mean a bigger blast.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! In a closed bottle, the fizz stays dissolved. Take off the lid, and the pressure drops. Now bubbles form all through the liquid. Magma does the same as it rises.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Most of the gas in magma is water vapor. Carbon dioxide is also found in magma, in smaller amounts. More gas can mean a more explosive eruption. Runny magma lets gas escape easily, so it often erupts gently.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pour cold sparkling water into a clear glass. Watch the bubbles form on the sides. The gas was dissolved under pressure. Why do bubbles show up only after the bottle opens?

Outro

Magma is full of bubbles because gas escapes as the pressure drops. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
