Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do trapdoor spiders live in burrows with lids?

The Big Idea

Trapdoor spiders live in burrows with lids because the lid hides them and keeps the burrow moist! The spider waits in the shadows. From inside, it feels footsteps on the ground.

Dig a Burrow

Step one: dig a burrow. Trapdoor spiders dig burrows in the ground, using strong jaws. Then they line the walls with silk, to keep the soil from crumbling.

Make a Lid

Step two: build a trapdoor. The spider makes a lid with a hinge of silk. It covers the lid with soil or moss, so it blends in with the ground.

Wait and Feel

Step three: wait quietly. The spider waits inside and feels the ground for footsteps. When a small insect walks by, the spider pops out, grabs it, and pulls it back inside.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The burrow is a tunnel in the ground. The inside is lined with soft silk. The lid works like a door on a hinge. And the moss on top hides it perfectly.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The lid keeps the burrow moist and safe. Trapdoor spiders can live for many years, and some stay in one burrow for most of their lives. Their lids can be hard to tell apart from the ground. If you ever see one, look from a distance and tell a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a trapdoor lid by taping a paper circle to the edge of a cup, like a hinge. Cover the lid with a little soil or leaves. Can your friend find the door? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
