Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do woodpeckers carve nest holes in trees?

The Big Idea

Woodpeckers carve nest holes in trees because a hole in a trunk is a safe, dry home! It keeps eggs away from most predators. And old holes help other animals, too.

Hammer a Hole

Step one: hammer a hole. A woodpecker taps on a tree with a strong, pointed beak. It hammers out a hole bit by bit, and the wood chips fly out.

Protect the Head

Step two: protect the head. Special muscles and a spongy bone help protect its head from all the shaking. That helps it hammer without getting hurt, like a built-in helmet.

Move In

Step three: move in. Inside the hole is a safe, dry place for eggs. A hole in a trunk keeps out most predators, and the thick wood keeps the nest cool in summer.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The strong, pointed beak works like a chisel. The tree trunk is the wall of the house. The hole leads to a roomy nest inside. Later, owls and squirrels may move into old holes.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Woodpeckers also tap to find insects and to call to each other. That drumming can be heard far away in spring, and it says, this is my tree. Other animals use old woodpecker holes for homes. Watch from a distance, and never poke into a nest hole.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! In spring, listen for drumming in a park or forest. Draw a tree trunk cut in half with a nest hole inside. Which animals might use the hole next year? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
