Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do bees build honeycomb out of six-sided cells?

The Big Idea

Bees build honeycomb out of six-sided cells because hexagons are the perfect shape! They fit together with no gaps. That saves wax and space.

Make Wax

Step one: make wax. Honeybees make wax from their own bodies. Worker bees shape the wax into tiny walls, and many bees work together to build the whole comb.

No Gaps

Step two: fit the shapes. Honeybees build wax cells shaped like hexagons, which have six sides. Hexagons fit together without any gaps, but circles leave gaps. Those gaps would waste space and wax.

Save Wax

Step three: store honey. The cells use the least amount of wax for the amount of honey they hold. The walls are thin, yet strong enough to hold heavy honey, so the bees use their wax wisely.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Each cell is a hexagon with six equal sides. The cells fit together with no gaps, like tiles on a floor. The walls are made of thin, light wax. And the cells hold sweet honey, or baby bees.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Circles leave gaps, but hexagons do not. A honeycomb can have thousands of cells, all sharing walls with their neighbors. Bees make wax from their bodies. Never poke a beehive, and ask a grown-up to admire it from afar.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Trace around a coin to draw circles that touch each other. Do they leave gaps? Now cut out six-sided shapes from paper and try to fit them together. Which one uses space better?

Outro

Bees are amazing builders, and hexagons are their secret. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
