Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do termites build tall mounds?
The Big Idea
Termites build tall mounds because the mounds work like a natural air conditioner! Inside is a maze of tunnels and chimneys. They keep the termites' home fresh and steady, even in hot places.
Tunnels Inside
Step one: build tunnels. In hot places like Africa and Australia, termites build mounds full of tunnels and chimneys. Some mounds are even taller than a person!
Air Moves
Step two: let the air flow. Warm air rises through the middle of the mound, and cooler air flows in at the bottom. That keeps the air moving all day long.
Fresh and Steady
Step three: stay comfortable. Fresh air comes in, and extra carbon dioxide, a gas animals breathe out, drifts away. The nest stays about the same temperature, which is just right for the colony.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The tall mound is built from soil and termite spit. Tunnels and chimneys run all the way through it. Warm air rises up and out. And cooler air flows in at the bottom.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Termites are tiny, but their mounds can be taller than you. Termites live in huge colonies of thousands, working together. The mound is like a giant breathing machine. Never poke a mound or try to open one up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, fill a mug with warm water, not hot. Hold a strip of tissue paper just above it. Watch the tissue flutter in the rising warm air. Warm air rises in a termite mound too. What do you think the chimney does?
