Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do burrowing owls live underground?

The Big Idea

Burrowing owls live underground because it keeps them cool, warm, and safe! They live on grassy prairies where there are very few trees. So they move into holes that other animals have already dug.

No Trees

Step one: look at the prairie. Burrowing owls live in open grasslands, like the prairies of western Canada. There are hardly any trees, so there are very few places to nest above ground.

Borrowed Burrows

Step two: use a ready-made home. Burrowing owls use holes dug by prairie dogs and ground squirrels. They do not need to dig much themselves, which saves lots of energy.

Cool and Safe

Step three: stay comfortable. Underground is cooler in summer and warmer in winter. It is also a safe hiding spot from hawks flying overhead.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Burrowing owls are small owls with round heads and bright yellow eyes. They have long legs for standing tall and running. They are often seen standing near the burrow entrance. Their prairie homes are the grasslands they need.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Burrowing owls are at risk in Canada. Protecting prairie grasslands helps owls and the animals that dig their burrows. They can be active in the daytime, not only at night. Watch burrowing owls from far away, and never go near a burrow.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a warm day, with a grown-up, feel the soil on top of the ground. Then feel the soil about ten centimeters down, in a shady spot. Which one is cooler? Why would an owl want to live down there?

Outro

Burrowing owls make the prairie their cozy underground home. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
