Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do birds choose different nest materials?
The Big Idea
Birds choose different nest materials because each material does a different job! They use what they can find nearby that keeps eggs safe and snug. So a nest tells you a lot about the bird that built it.
Strong Walls
Step one: build strong walls. Swallows use mud for sturdy walls, and eagles stack big sticks. Strong materials make a nest that can hold up eggs, chicks, and even the wind.
Tiny Cups
Step two: make a tiny cup. Hummingbirds use spider silk and moss to build a cup no bigger than a walnut shell. The silk stretches, so the nest grows as the chicks do.
Soft Lining
Step three: add a soft lining. Feathers, fur, and soft plants trap warm air around the eggs. Birds line the inside of the nest with whatever soft things they find nearby.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Mud makes strong, hard walls. Big sticks build a roomy nest for large birds. Spider silk is stretchy and sticky for tiny cups. And feathers make a soft, warm bed.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some birds even pick up bits of hair or twine from yards. Which materials a bird uses depends on what it finds close by. A good nest keeps eggs warm and safe. Watch nests from far away, and never touch one.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Build two small nests from bottle caps, one with twigs and one with cotton. Put a pom-pom egg in each one. Which one looks cozier? Ask a grown-up to hold a fan on low to make a gentle breeze. Which nest holds up better?
