Why Do African Wild Dogs Vote with Sneezes?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do African wild dogs vote with sneezes?

The Big Idea

African wild dogs vote with sneezes, which is a quiet way to decide when to go hunting! Before a hunt, the pack gathers for a greeting. Scientists found that enough sneezes mean it is time to go.

The Gathering

Step one: the gathering. African wild dogs gather for a greeting before a hunt, with lots of squeaking and tail wagging. During the greeting, some of the dogs sneeze.

Count the Sneezes

Step two: counting sneezes. Scientists found that when enough dogs sneeze, the pack heads out to hunt. The more sneezes there are, the more likely they go.

Who Starts It

Step three: who starts it. When a high-ranking dog starts the gathering, only a few sneezes are needed. A lower-ranking dog needs many more. It is a bit like voting without words.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The whole pack gathers together. Some of the dogs sneeze. Enough sneezes win the vote. Then the pack heads out to hunt. It is a team decision.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The more sneezes, the more likely they go hunting. African wild dogs live in Africa, south of the Sahara. Each dog has a different coat pattern, like a fingerprint. Wild dogs are wild, so watch from a safe distance.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hold a pretend sneeze vote with your family to decide on a snack. Each person fake sneezes once to vote for their choice. Count up the votes. Did everyone agree? How is it like a pack's vote?
