Why Do Seahorse Dads Carry the Babies?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do seahorse dads carry the babies?

The Big Idea

Seahorse dads carry the babies because seahorse dads have a belly pouch, just for the eggs! That makes seahorses one of the very few animals where dads are the ones who are pregnant. The pouch keeps the eggs safe until they are ready to hatch.

The Pouch

Step one: the pouch. A male seahorse has a pouch on his belly. The female puts her eggs inside it, and then the eggs start to grow.

Safe and Supplied

Step two: safe and supplied. He carries the eggs for two to four weeks. During that time, the pouch keeps them safe and supplied with oxygen.

Birth Day

Step three: birth day. Then he gives birth to dozens, or even hundreds, of tiny seahorses. The babies are on their own right away, and they swim off to find food.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Dad has a pouch on his belly. The eggs grow safe inside. The pouch gives them the oxygen they need. Then the babies swim out into the ocean. It is dad who does the carrying.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Seahorses are one of the few animals where dads are pregnant. Seahorses are fish, even though they look like tiny horses. They hold onto seagrass with their tails. If you spot a seahorse while snorkeling, look but never touch.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Carry a small stuffed toy in a pocket or a cloth pouch for an hour. Be very careful with it. Notice what you had to do to keep it safe. What would a seahorse dad do? Tell a grown-up!
