Why Do Swans Mate for Long Partnerships?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do swans mate for long partnerships?

The Big Idea

Swans often stay with the same partner for many years, because a good team makes a good family! Having a partner helps them guard the nest and raise their cygnets. Pairs that know each other work better together.

Long Partners

Step one: long partners. Swans often stay with the same partner for many years. In many cases, swans have been known to stay together for life.

Take Turns

Step two: taking turns. One swan can keep watch over the nest while the other one feeds. That way, the eggs are never left alone.

A Good Team

Step three: a good team. Their babies are called cygnets. Pairs that know each other work better together, so they raise their cygnets more easily.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Two swans pair up and stay together. They build a big nest near the water. One guards while the other eats. And together they raise the cygnets. Teamwork pays off.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Not all birds stay together, but swans are famous for it. Swan pairs often return to the same nesting spot each year. Adult swans can be very protective of their nests. Watch swans from far away, and never feed or approach them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Name two jobs that parents share in human families, such as cooking or picking up kids. Think about how working as a team helps. Write down your two jobs. Do you think swans have a similar schedule? Tell a grown-up!
