Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do you need iron in food?

The Big Idea

You need iron in food because iron helps your blood carry oxygen! Iron is part of hemoglobin, the red substance in your red blood cells. Without enough iron, you can feel tired and look pale.

Hemoglobin

Step one: hemoglobin. Red blood cells contain a protein called hemoglobin. It works like a tiny magnet for oxygen, picking it up in your lungs and dropping it off wherever your body needs it.

Iron Inside

Step two: iron inside. Each hemoglobin holds iron, and the iron is what grabs the oxygen. Your body cannot make iron itself, so it gets it from food. That is why a balanced diet is so important.

Foods With Iron

Step three: foods with iron. Beans, lean meat, eggs, and leafy greens like spinach all contain iron. Eating a variety of foods helps your body get enough. Meals cooked in an iron pan can pick up a little iron, too.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Beans have iron. Leafy greens do, too. Lean meat is a good source. And some cereals have extra iron added.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Low iron can leave you tired and pale. Only a doctor can tell if someone needs more iron, usually with a simple blood test. Never take iron pills unless a doctor says so, because too much is unsafe. Foods with vitamin C, like oranges, help your body use iron.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at your lunch or dinner plate. Can you spot a food with iron, like beans or greens? Tell someone about your find!
