Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a stuffy nose change your voice?
The Big Idea
A stuffy nose changes your voice because blocked nasal spaces change resonance, the echo chambers of speech! Your sound bounces around inside your head and nose. When the spaces fill up, the sound changes, and that is the classic cold voice.
Sound Starts
Step one: sound starts. Your voice begins in your throat, where two stretchy bands called vocal cords buzz as air passes by. That buzz is a raw sound.
Spaces Echo
Step two: spaces echo. The sound then travels through your throat, mouth, and nose, and the air in those spaces vibrates along with it. That is resonance, and it gives each voice its special sound.
Blocked Space
Step three: a blocked space. When you have a cold, extra mucus and swelling fill the nose, so the sound cannot flow the same way. Your voice sounds stuffy, and that is temporary.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Vocal cords make the buzz. Your mouth space shapes the sound. Your nose space adds its own echo. When a cold blocks it, your voice sounds different.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Echo chambers change sound, like the inside of a guitar. A stuffy voice gets back to normal when the cold clears. Resting and drinking water are good for a cold, but ask a grown-up what to do. Medicine only from a grown-up, and tell them if you feel sick.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Say the word moon out loud. Gently pinch your nose and say it again. Hear how the echo changes?
