Why Do You Need Lungs?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do you need lungs?

The Big Idea

You need lungs because they trade gases with the air! Oxygen goes in, and carbon dioxide comes out. This happens across tiny, moist air sacs called alveoli.

Air Goes In

Step one: air goes in. When you breathe in, air travels through your nose or mouth and down your windpipe. Then it splits into two tubes, one for each lung, like a tree trunk splitting into two big branches.

Trade Gases

Step two: trade gases. At the ends of the tiny tubes are little air sacs called alveoli. Oxygen crosses into the blood, and carbon dioxide, a waste gas, crosses out of the blood.

Air Goes Out

Step three: air goes out. When you breathe out, the carbon dioxide leaves your body. Your blood carries the fresh oxygen to every part of you, from your brain to your toes. Every part of you needs oxygen to work.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Air comes in through your nose and mouth. It travels down branching tubes, like a tree. The tubes end in tiny air sacs. Blood vessels wrap around the sacs and swap the gases.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! You breathe about 20,000 times a day. Your lungs are soft and spongy. The muscle under your lungs, called the diaphragm, helps you breathe. If breathing ever feels hard, tell a grown-up right away.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Place your hands on your ribs and breathe slowly. Feel your chest get bigger as air comes in. Then feel it shrink as the air goes out. Then tell someone what you noticed!

Outro

Your lungs swap oxygen for carbon dioxide with every breath. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
