Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do veins look blueish under skin?

The Big Idea

Veins look bluish under your skin, but the blood inside them is always red! Your skin filters light, so veins look blue or green. It is a trick of light, not blue blood.

Light Hits Skin

Step one: light hits skin. White light is a mix of all colors, from red to blue. When it hits your skin, different colors travel different distances. Blue light does not go in very far.

Skin Filters It

Step two: skin filters light. Red light goes deeper into skin and mostly gets absorbed by the blood and tissue below. More blue and green light bounces back to your eyes, so veins look bluish-green.

Blood Is Red

Step three: blood is red. If you saw the blood inside a vein, it would be red. Blood with less oxygen is just a darker red, and blood with lots of oxygen is bright red.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Blood with lots of oxygen is bright red. Blood with less oxygen is a darker red. Veins only look blue through the skin. Your skin filters the light that reaches your eyes.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Veins carry blood back to your heart. Arteries carry blood away from your heart, and they are deeper inside, so you usually cannot see them. People with different skin tones can see veins in different ways. Never poke or squeeze your veins, and tell a grown-up if your arm hurts.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at the inside of your wrist in bright light. Can you see bluish lines? Remember that the blood inside is really red!

Outro

Veins look blue because of light and skin, but blood is always red. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
