Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is space black?
The Big Idea
Space looks black because it has almost no air! Without air, sunlight has nothing to bounce off. It zooms straight past, so your eyes see darkness. Let's find out how that works!
Space Has Almost No Air
Number one: space has almost no air. Here on Earth, we're wrapped in a thick blanket of air. But out in space, there's almost nothing at all. Scientists call that a vacuum. Without air, there's nothing for light to bounce around.
Light Needs Something to Scatter
Number two: light needs something to scatter. Light travels in straight lines until it hits tiny bits, like air molecules. When light bounces off those bits, it spreads out in all directions. That's called scattering. In space, sunlight just keeps going straight, so it never bounces into your eyes.
A Blue Sky Is an Earth Air Trick
Number three: a blue sky is an Earth air trick! Sunlight is made of all the colors of the rainbow mixed together. When it scatters in Earth's air, blue light scatters the most. That's why our sky is blue!
Earth's Sky vs. Space
Let's compare! Earth's sky is full of air, so scattered blue light fills it up. Blue! Space has almost no air, so there's nothing to scatter the light. Black! Even in the daytime, astronauts in space see a black sky, with the bright Sun shining in it!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Space is not empty of light. It's empty of scatter! On the Moon, there's no air, so the sky is black even in the daytime. Sunsets look orange and red, because sunlight travels through extra air to reach you. And on Mars, the dusty daytime sky looks like butterscotch, but its sunsets look blue!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Imagine a flashlight in a dark room. In clear air, it's hard to see the beam. You mostly see the spot where it lands. Now, with a grown-up's help, add a little mist from a spray bottle. Suddenly, the beam glows! Light needs something to scatter, just like in our sky!
Outro
So space is black because there's almost no air to scatter the light! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
