Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we orbit the Sun instead of falling in?
The Big Idea
Earth is always falling toward the Sun, but it's also zooming sideways so fast that it keeps missing! That falling-and-missing path is called an orbit. Let's find out how it works!
Gravity Pulls Inward
Number one: gravity pulls inward. The Sun is huge, and its gravity pulls everything toward it, like an invisible tug. It's the same kind of pull that makes an apple fall down here on Earth.
Earth Is Also Moving Sideways
Number two: Earth is also moving sideways. Earth isn't just sitting there. It's zooming sideways through space, super fast! And space has almost no air to slow it down, so it just keeps on going.
Fall + Sideways Speed = Orbit
Number three: falling plus sideways speed makes an orbit. Earth keeps falling toward the Sun, but its sideways speed keeps carrying it forward. So instead of crashing in, it curves around, and around. Together, they make a perfect path, an orbit!
Earth's Path Around the Sun
Here's Earth's path around the Sun. The Sun sits at the center. Earth is always moving along this path. One trip all the way around takes one whole year! The balance of gravity and sideways motion keeps Earth in a steady orbit, year after year.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Miss the sideways speed, and you fall in! Without it, gravity would pull Earth straight into the Sun. Earth zooms around the Sun at about thirty kilometers every second! Earth's orbit isn't a perfect circle. It's a slightly stretched circle, called an ellipse. And the Moon and the space station orbit Earth in the very same way!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Tie a soft ball to a string. Go somewhere with lots of space, away from people, and swing it in a circle above your head. Feel the pull in the string? That's like gravity, pulling inward! And the ball's speed keeps it going around, just like Earth. What happens if you let go? It flies off in a straight line!
Outro
Earth is always falling toward the Sun, and always missing. That's an orbit! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
