Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we have fingerprints?
The Big Idea
Look closely at your fingertips. See those tiny swirly lines? Those are your fingerprints! They help you grip, they help you feel, and they were set before you were even born!
Grip Treads
Job one: grip treads! The raised lines on your fingertips work a bit like the treads on a bike tire. They help your fingers grip rough or wet things, so you can hold on tight!
Precise Touch
Job two: precise touch! When you slide your finger across something, the ridges make tiny vibrations. Nerves in your skin feel them, so you can sense touch, texture and pressure, And do delicate tasks, like picking up a tiny pea!
Set Before Birth
Job three: they were set before you were born! Fingerprints start forming in the womb, around weeks 10 to 16. Their pattern stays the same your whole life. And even identical twins have different fingerprints!
A Closer Look
So, what do fingerprints look like? There are three main patterns. In a loop, the ridges enter from one side, loop around, and exit on the same side. In a whorl, the ridges form a circle or spiral around a center point. In an arch, the ridges rise up like a little hill. Which one do you have?
Quick Facts
Quick facts! No two people have the exact same set of fingerprints. Not even identical twins! That's what makes you one of a kind! Koalas have fingerprints too, and they look a lot like ours! Your toes have prints too, called toe prints!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Press a fingertip on a clean glass or mirror. What do you see? Breathe on it, and your print may show up! Wipe it away, and try another finger. Is it a loop, a whorl, or an arch?
