Book 33, Question 84

Why do cats scratch things?

Cats scratch for several reasons.

Scratching helps remove the old outer layers of their claws, so sharp new claws can show. It also stretches their shoulders and back. And it leaves a scent mark from tiny glands in the paws, which says, “This is my place.” That is why a scratching post is such a useful tool. Scratching is a natural, healthy habit.
