Book 32, Question 99

How can baby turtles stay in the nest all winter?

In cold places, some baby turtles, like painted turtles, hatch in the fall but stay in their nest through the winter.

They tuck in under the soil, with their bodies slowed down. Some can even handle a bit of freezing in the nest. When spring arrives, they dig out and head for the water. Staying put keeps them out of cold, wet danger.
