Book 32, Question 97

Why do volunteers put cages over turtle nests?

Turtle nests are easy to find for animals like raccoons and foxes.

People who care about turtles put wire cages over the nests. The cage has holes big enough for baby turtles to go through when they hatch, but small enough to keep out hungry animals. Volunteers mark the place and check on the nest. It is a way to give hatchlings a head start.
