Book 31, Question 110
What is a pecking order?
In a flock of chickens, each hen learns who is bossy and who gives way.
This ranking is called a pecking order. The top hen eats and drinks first, and others wait. Once the order is settled, there is less fighting, because everyone knows where they stand. Birds recognize each other by faces, voices, and body size. Some other animals sort out an order of who goes first too.
