Book 31, Question 59

What is a brood patch?

A brood patch is a warm bare spot on a bird’s belly where feathers have dropped out.

Extra blood flows close to the skin there, so heat passes directly to the eggs. When the bird sits on its eggs, the bare skin touches them. Feathers would act like a blanket and keep heat from reaching the eggs, so this tiny patch of skin is better.
