What is a brood patch?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a brood patch?

The Big Idea

Some birds grow a special bare spot! It helps them keep their eggs warm. What is a brood patch?

A Bare Spot

Step one: A Bare Spot. A brood patch is a warm, bare spot on a bird's belly where feathers have dropped out. It forms during nesting season.

Extra Warmth

Step two: Extra Warmth. Extra blood flows close to the skin there. So heat passes straight to the eggs when the bare skin touches them.

Why Not Feathers

Step three: Why Not Feathers. Feathers would act like a blanket and keep heat from reaching the eggs. So this tiny patch of bare skin works better.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Drop out. Near the skin. Passes through. Kept warm.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some birds pull their own belly feathers to line the nest. Bare skin passes heat to the eggs. Feathers work like blankets. The brood patch keeps eggs warm.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! A grown-up fills two bottles with warm tap water, not hot. Wrap one in a thin cloth. Wrap the other in a thick towel. Feel each one with your hand. Which passes more heat to your hand?
