Book 30, Question 134

How do wetlands act like nature's water filter?

Wetlands such as marshes and swamps slow down water as it flows through thick plants.

The plants and soil trap mud and absorb extra nutrients, and tiny microbes break down some pollution. The water that leaves is cleaner than the water that came in. Wetlands also soak up floods and give homes to birds, frogs, and fish. Many have been protected or restored for these reasons.
