Why does the city sometimes tell people to boil their tap water?
Sometimes a water main breaks or a test finds that germs could be in the water.
Officials then issue a boil-water advisory to keep people safe until the water is checked. A grown-up brings the water to a full rolling boil for at least one minute and then lets it cool before using it. Kids should never handle boiling water.
