Book 30, Question 92

How did people carry water across long distances before pumps?

Ancient builders made channels and stone bridges called aqueducts that let water flow downhill using gravity.

The Romans built hundreds of miles of them, with a slight slope all the way. Some still stand today. Water could run from distant springs into cities for fountains and baths. The idea of using gravity to carry water is still used by modern water systems.
