The Big Idea

Sometimes cities say to boil tap water! That sounds serious. Why?

Something Changed

Step one: Something Changed. Sometimes a water main breaks, or a test finds that germs could be in the water. Officials then issue a boil-water advisory.

Keeping Safe

Step two: Keeping Safe. The advisory keeps people safe until the water is checked. Boiling kills most germs that can make people sick.

A Grown-Up Job

Step three: A Grown-Up Job. A grown-up brings the water to a full rolling boil for at least one minute, then lets it cool before using it. Kids should never handle boiling water.
