Book 30, Question 79

Why do water intake pipes reach so far out into a lake?

Water near the shore can be muddy and carry runoff from streets and beaches.

Farther out and deeper down, the water is usually colder, clearer, and cleaner, which makes it easier to treat. Intake pipes sit on or below the bottom of the lake, far from shore, and have screens to keep out fish and debris. Some run for more than a mile.
