Book 30, Question 79 · Video
Why do water intake pipes reach so far out into a lake?
Water near the shore can be muddy and carry runoff from streets and beaches. Farther out and deeper down, the water is usually colder, clearer, and cleaner, which makes it easier to treat. Intake pipes sit on or below the bottom of the lake, far from shore, and have screens to keep out fish and debris. Some run for more than a mile.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do water intake pipes reach so far out into a lake?
The Big Idea
Water intake pipes go far out into the lake! Why not grab water from the shore? Let's find out.
Near the Shore
Step one: Near the Shore. Water near the shore can be muddy. It can also carry runoff from streets and beaches after a rain.
Far and Deep
Step two: Far and Deep. Farther out and deeper down, the water is usually colder, clearer, and cleaner. That makes it easier to treat at the plant.
Screens
Step three: Screens. Intake pipes sit on or below the lake bottom, far from shore. They have screens to keep out fish and debris, and some run for more than a mile.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Long. Blocks fish. Cleaner. Treats it.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Intake screens also keep out zebra mussels and sticks. Shore water is muddy. Deep water is cold. Over a mile long.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Fill a cup with water. Sip it through a long straw. Notice the water travels up the straw. Imagine the straw is an intake pipe. Where would you put its end?
Outro
Water near the shore can be muddy and carry runoff, while water farther out and deeper is colder, clearer, and easier to treat. So intake pipes sit far from shore on the lake bottom, with screens to keep out fish and debris. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises.
