Book 28, Question 59

What is drafting in cycling?

When a cyclist rides directly behind another rider, the front rider punches a hole in the air.

The rider behind faces less air, so they use less energy, up to about a third less. Teams take turns at the front so everyone gets rest. Birds fly in lines for a similar reason. Drafting is a great example of how teamwork uses physics.
