What gear does a young rock hound need?
Basic gear includes safety glasses, sturdy shoes, gloves for scratchy rocks, a magnifying lens, a notebook and pencil, small bags, and newspapers to wrap fragile finds.
A grown-up should handle any hammer or chisel, and everyone nearby needs eye protection when rocks are split because chips can fly. Bring water and a snack, and watch for slippery or steep places.
