Book 26, Question 44

Could a chameleon's color-changing skin become a new kind of material?

Chameleon skin has layers of tiny crystals.

When the chameleon relaxes or tightens its skin, the spacing between the crystals changes, and they reflect different colors of light. Scientists copied the idea to make stretchy films that change color when they are pulled. Someday this kind of material could be used as color-changing sensors, safety labels, or clothing that adapts to its surroundings.
