Book 26, Question 42

Why are honeycomb patterns used in strong, light panels?

Engineers make panels by putting a honeycomb of thin material between two thin sheets, like a sandwich.

The sheets resist stretching and squashing, and the honeycomb keeps them apart so the panel does not bend easily. Most of the panel is air, so it is very light. You can find these panels in airplane floors, doors, surfboards, and cardboard boxes. They are strong for their weight.
