Book 26, Question 42 · Video
Why are honeycomb patterns used in strong, light panels?
Engineers make panels by putting a honeycomb of thin material between two thin sheets, like a sandwich. The sheets resist stretching and squashing, and the honeycomb keeps them apart so the panel does not bend easily. Most of the panel is air, so it is very light. You can find these panels in airplane floors, doors, surfboards, and cardboard boxes. They are strong for their weight.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are honeycomb patterns used in strong, light panels?
The Big Idea
Bees build honeycombs with six-sided cells. Engineers copy that pattern! It makes panels strong and light.
Sandwich
Step one: Sandwich. Engineers make panels by putting a honeycomb of thin material between two thin sheets, like a sandwich. Each part has a job.
Stiff
Step two: Stiff. The sheets resist stretching and squashing. The honeycomb keeps them apart, so the panel does not bend easily.
Light
Step three: Light. Most of the panel is air, so it is very light. You find these panels in airplane floors, doors, surfboards, and cardboard boxes.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A sheet on top. Honeycomb in the middle. A sheet below. Air fills the cells.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Six-sided shapes also appear in rock columns, like those at the Giant's Causeway. Bees save wax. Planes need light floors. Doors use it too.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, cut a cardboard tube into rings. Glue them side by side between two sheets of cardboard. Test how much weight it holds. Compare it to one plain sheet. Watch sharp edges and scissors.
Outro
Honeycomb patterns make panels strong and light because the honeycomb keeps two sheets apart so they don't bend, while most of the panel is air. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring!
