Book 25, Question 116

What is a modern landfill like?

A modern landfill is a carefully engineered site, not just a dump.

It starts with a thick liner of clay and plastic to keep liquids from soaking into the ground. Trash is spread, squashed, and covered with soil each day. Pipes collect the liquid that drains through the trash and the gas, called methane, which can be burned to make electricity. After closing, many landfills become parks.
