Book 25, Question 115
Why do aluminum cans jump off a belt at the recycling plant?
At a recycling plant, items ride along a conveyor belt.
Giant magnets lift out steel cans, but aluminum is not magnetic. So the plant uses a fast-spinning magnet at the end of the belt. It creates swirling electric currents inside each aluminum can, and those currents make the can act like a magnet that is pushed away. The cans leap forward into their own bin, while paper and glass fall straight down.
