Book 25, Question 108
How do thick windows keep city noise out?
Sound is a vibration, and glass vibrates when sound hits it.
Double and triple windows have two or three panes with a gap of air or gas between, and the panes are often different thicknesses. The vibrations lose energy as they pass from one pane to the next. Tight seals matter too, since sound sneaks through tiny gaps. That's why closing a window makes a room quieter.
